Make a Choice – Coffee or Mug?

It was an extremely busy and hectic week for me when suddenly everything became urgent and required immediate attention. As I was trying hard to juggle, my only consolation was my daily prayers to my Lord, begging Him for strength and sanity to keep me going, Alhamdulillaah. By the end of the week, I was already a master of smile-while-tears-rolling-down-the-cheek expert. Talking about oxymoron in life…

Reflecting on that week, I pondered upon this question– Is this life?

I remembered a story of a professor who invited his students for his infamous delicious coffee. As they sat and talked, the professor asked them about the mugs in their hands and asked – Why did you choose those mugs over others on the table?

Rather intriguing question, don’t you think so? Obviously, the mugs in the students’ hands were far more attractive and nicer-looking than the ones on the table.

While his students were scratching their heads, he threw the next question – Which one is important - the coffee or the mug?

Hah? Yup, I know, silly question. Of course, the coffee.  That is what we drink. The mug is just something which holds the coffee. The bottom line is when I am thirsty; I want my coffee and I don’t really care how my mug looks like. You do agree with me, don’t you?

The good coffee is like a good life- satisfying; while the mug is just what holds life-wealth, job and status.

So, if that is the case, why must we sometimes go insane looking for good looking mugs when what we actually need is just a cup of delicious coffee! Think about it…

“Indeed my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds?(6:612)
