All of the married sisters schooled her on the ups and downs of marriage and how to handle those spats that often occur between a man and a wife. She was also given advice on sexual matters and sexual health. It’s funny but with all that I’ve been exposed to as an American living in a sex obsessed culture, I found myself blushing when these matters were discussed. I don’t know if it was Puritan hypocrisy or haya but I had to remind myself that those married sisters were doing their Islamic duty.

Meditation(which in an Islamic sense means Dhikr and Salat) can train the brain to switch out of ‘anxiety’ mode by increasing activity in the left pre-frontal cortex (the happy side!). Obviously this cannot be done overnight and there are other factors at play with depression so don’t go throwing your meds away just yet!

I used to have a comfort zone where I knew I wouldn’t fail.
The same four walls and busy work were really more like jail.
I longed so much to do the things I’d never done before,
But stayed inside my comfort zone and paced the same old floor.
I said it didn’t matter that I wasn’t doing much.
I said I didn’t care for things like commission checks and such.
I claimed to be so busy with things inside my zone,
But deep inside I longed for something special of my own.
I couldn’t let my life go by just watching others win.
I held my breath; I stepped outside and let the change begin.

Sometimes I wonder if living in a non-Muslim society scares us so much that we become extreme (no, not as in ‘extremists’) but as in we either force our kids into all things ‘Muslim’ and nothing else, or we force our kids into all things ‘North American’ and keep that ‘Muslim-thing’ very low key. I try to keep a balance, it’s somewhat easy for me because I have always lived in Trinidad, and grew up pretty ‘westernized’, so I don’t struggle much with the way of life here, but I think that the balance that I grew up with has helped me to ‘integrate’ (as they like to call it) more easily.

We want the siege of Gaza to end. For forty years, Israel has controlled Palestinians. Israel says Gaza is no longer occupied, yet it denies Palestinians access to jobs, travel, visitors, commerce, education, health and medical care. It has made the Gaza Strip into a prison controlled by land, sea and air. Israel forces Palestinians to live on the brink of humanitarian catastrophe. It is time for Gaza to be free.

Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face.
“Why do you do that, mommy?” he asked.
“To make myself beautiful,” she replied as she began to remove the cream with a tissue.
“What’s the matter,” asked little Johnny. “Giving up?
